THE BAND
Trapped In Static is a New York City alternative rock band formed in 2011, featuring singer, guitarist, and songwriter Athan Hilaki, formerly a member of the Greek indie/electro-pop band GAD., drummer David Torres, and bassist Gina Rebelo.
Blending atmospheric guitars, driving rhythms, powerful vocals, and emotionally direct songwriting, Trapped In Static creates music that moves between melodic indie rock and heavier alternative rock. Drawing from personal experience, their songs explore struggle, isolation, resilience, and the search for a way forward.
The name Trapped In Static reflects the central idea behind the music: the feeling of being surrounded by noise, pressure, fear, expectations, and circumstances that can prevent people from moving forward. Through their songs, the band explores the struggle to break free from those forces and find clarity, connection, and hope.
Since making their New York City debut in 2011, Trapped In Static has performed on the main stages of the Montauk Music Festival and Pittsburgh Pride Festival, appeared as a featured artist at the TD Five Boro Bike Tour and the New York City Marathon from 2016 through 2019, and headlined sold-out shows at The Bitter End and The Studio at Webster Hall in July 2016. In 2015, the band was twice named Artist of the Week by WorldMusicStage.com and headlined a show at the legendary World Cafe Live in Pennsylvania. In October 2014, the television movie Preying for Mercy was released featuring music written and performed by Trapped In Static. Earlier that year, the band performed at Make Music Harvard Square in Boston, opened for Wussy at The Studio at Webster Hall, appeared at the 2014 MOVE Music Festival in Albany, and headlined a sold-out show at Bowery Electric in New York City. In October 2013, Trapped In Static was selected as one of the top three artists at the fifth annual RAW Awards. In May 2013, the band won ArtistSignal’s Artist of the Month after receiving more than 48,000 votes in a worldwide competition featuring more than 1,000 artists. The win led to the release of their debut EP, On a Stage, as well as two live performances on the television show NiteClub Ratings and a performance at K. Bobby’s private fashion show in Hoboken, New Jersey. Other highlights include live performances on WVIP 93.5 FM, Hellas FM, and Nexus Radio, an appearance on the television show Minding Your Business on MNN, and being named a top-ten finalist in Z100’s Hometown Hero competition in 2011.
